The best in the business of mechanochemistry

Dr. Tomislav Stolar began his research in mechanochemistry in 2013. Since then, he has been at the forefront of innovation in mechanochemistry, including early in situ monitoring studies and the development of new mechanochemical equipment to combine mechanochemistry with other energy sources. 

Through his Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD theses and postdoctoral research projects, Dr. Stolar utilised mechanochemistry across a wide range of chemical areas. This includes synthetic organic (C-O and C-N bonds), supramolecular (MOFs, COFs, HOFs, cocrystals, salts, polymorphs), organometallic (C-H bond activation), inorganic (alkalides, metathesis, minerals), and polymer chemistry (polymerisation and depolymerisation). The breadth of his research is also reflected in the publication of 30 peer-reviewed scientific papers to date. Among them, two invited review papers on mechanochemistry stand out: one by the editorial board of Angewandte Chemie International Edition (German Chemical Society) and another by Chem (Cell Press) — both leading journals in the field of Chemistry.

Dr Stolar serves the community by regularly peer-reviewing articles in leading scientific journals, including JACS, Green Chemistry, ChemSusChem, Chem Eur J, ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, and RSC Mechanochemistry. Dr Stolar has also been appointed by the EU Commission to evaluate ERC grant proposals.

Dr. Stolar gave more than 10 invited talks at scientific conferences and university departments and was awarded several prizes, including the Lavoslav Ruzicka Prize for valuable scientific work in the field of chemistry from the Croatian Chemical Society.

Dr. Stolar won several prestigious fellowships for his research, including the 2023 and 2024 Adolf Martens Fellowships from the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) and the 2025 Add-on Fellowship for Interdisciplinary Science and Transfer from the Joachim Herz Foundation. 

Along with Prof. Franziska Emmerling and other colleagues from BAM, Dr. Stolar was instrumental in organizing INCOME 2025—The Mechanochemistry Conference, which was held in Berlin Adlershof. 

In his efforts to transfer mechanochemistry to industry, Dr. Stolar won several pitching competitions, including the 2023 Falling Walls Lab Berlin, the Best Pitch Talk award voted by the audience at Berlin PostDoc Day 2023, and the Green Impact Award from the Aurel Steinert Foundation at the 2025 Circular Valley Forum.  

After decades of extensive community research on mechanochemistry, Dr. Stolar believed there was little industry application to show for it. Consequently, he took the initiative to lead the commercialization of mechanochemistry.
